clarification assignment 6.2: "traversal of the kernel"

Hello,

I have a problem with understanding the task description of exercise 2 of assignment 6. It says "how much energy does one traversal of the kernel need...". What do you mean by "one traversal"?

In my screenshot. Do you mean a or b?

loop

Or in other words. Which formula do you want:

  • total-energy / call-count
  • (total-energy / call-count) / 10^8

Thank you!

Stefan

side note: assignment 5, exercise 1 has a similar wording which is not 100% clear: "Instrument the inner benchmark loop so that every full loop traversal is recognised".

Dear Stefan,

with "kernel traversal" we mean one full execution of the inner loop, i.e., "total-energy / call-count" in your terminology.

Please note that you should not copy the loop code verbatim from the assignment page - "10^8" is meant to mean "100000000" and not an exclusive-OR of the integers 10 and 8. The code in your screenshot is valid C, but it will not work as intended. I will change the assignment accordingly to avoid any mishaps.

Best,

Georg.

Dear Georg,

thank you for the reply.

And thank you for pointing out the xor-operator. I just didn't want to write the exact solution in the forum...

Best,
Stefan
